BASIC JOB FUNCTION AND PURPOSE
Picks up and delivers packages, documents, mail and other items for mostly business establishments, involving outside travel using a Company owned motor vehicle.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
- Picks up various packages, boxes, documents, merchandise, mail or other items from business establishments in accordance with written or verbal instructions.
- Drives motor vehicle to destination, using map and/or following established route or written and verbal instructions.
- Delivers various items to customers, following instructions.
- Keeps log of items received and delivered, noting time and date, and obtains signatures on receipts for delivery.
- Completes shipping order and delivery forms, mileage chart, car report, daily logs and related records.
- Reviews paperwork for proper completion and transport before turning in to supervisor.
- Services vehicle driven with gas, oil and vehicle vitals inspection.
- Receives instruction on two-way communication system from dispatcher.
- Uses computerized electronic devices.
- Uses effective public relation skills to obtain information and to maintain a positive Company image with the customer and public.
- Collects money on C.O.D.'s and appropriately accounts for the cash collected
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Makes special runs as requested. Participates in training new courier/driver.
- Makes copies of paperwork as needed.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Must obtain chauffeur's license and have a driving record which demonstrates excellent and defensive driving ability. Driving ability requires being free from drugs and alcohol.
- Must be able to drive van or car including motor vehicle with stick shift in a safe and alert fashion visually, applying defensive driving habits, listening for traffic warnings, and experience with all types of weather conditions.
- Pick ups and delivery requires ability to move up to one-hundred (100) pounds. A dolly, handcart and/or forklift truck generally available for heavier items.
- Ability to hear and read verbal and written instructions, reason out problem situations, follow map, follow directions which are given, accurately and carefully. Must communicate verbally and in writing for dispatch purposes and required legible paperwork.
- Must have physical stamina to work full days, driving for long periods, moving around locations by climbing stairs, squatting, bending, lifting, carrying etc., during runs.
- Must have neat, clean appearance and represent the Company in a professional manner, interacting with the customer in a pleasant and friendly way. Must comply with Company uniform policy.
- Ability to speak clearly and avoid miscommunications, using two-way radio, car phone, telephone and various electronic devices and written and verbal communication.
